FRAME
BROOKLYN, NY
Frame is a hotel that focuses on the psychological and social benefits art brings to humans. The project dives in to the meaning of the frame and how it contains pieces of art that create feelings and responses, the same way that the hotel contains diverse clientele that grow the community. Beginning with an analytical approach to the myriad of ways to create a frame, I chose to place faceted objects within a linear frame, to comment on the special pieces of art and people the frame of the hotel will contain.
The project matches the new zoning of the site, at 22 stories, and is located in the Gowanus Canal district of Brooklyn. This area was designated a superfund site in 2010, and is slowly rebuilding itself as a vibrant area. This art hotel rejuvenates the historically industrial canal. The site was previously home to an ice factory and is currently home to a concrete plant and two abandoned historic buildings. By using materials like concrete and timber, frame will relate to its industrial canal roots.
The frame to reacts to zoning requirements as well as works to relate from a large high-rise scale to a small human scale. Frame is a sculptural building that reacts to the unique site conditions and creates a desirable destination for its guests. The programs include a sculpture garden, a high-end restaurant, an art centric bar, an event space, and art studios throughout the hotel.
SERIES OF SECTIONS: CROSS SECTIONS AND LONGITUDINAL SECTION. THE CROSS SECTIONS HIGHLIGHT THE DIFFERENCES IN HEIGHT ACROSS THE SITE FROM THE FLOATING GALLERY SPACES TO THE TALLEST HEIGHT OF THE HOTEL. THE LONGITUDINAL SECTION HIGHLIGHTS THE EVENT SPACE AT THE LEFT AND THE UNIQUE DOUBLE HEIGHT ROOMS IN THE HOTEL.
